Committee Reports

  • Club Education - Jennifer Beach-Buda. Three Club Education seminars were held at the 1998 National. The Club Education committee strives to meet the needs of BCOA by providing educational materials and events requested by the membership.

  • BCOA Web Site - Jennifer Beach-Buda. The BCOA web site continues to be an excellent medium to distribute information about BCOA, our mission, and our events. The site receives hundreds of visits each month. Volunteers who have contributed their efforts to this project recently include Barbara O'Neill, Helen Lee, and Carol & Paul Enz. A thank you note was sent from judge Charles Herendeen complimenting BCOA on it's web site.

  • AKC Gazette Column - Jennifer Beach-Buda. The AKC Gazette has a new breed columns editor, Arliss Avalone. Arliss has been great to work with and is a skilled editor. Pat Murphy has contributed a column on awareness of health issues in Borzoi which will be published in the November, 1998 issue. Hound columns will appear in August and November, 1998 and February and May, 1999.

  • BCOA Publicity Committee - Kalen Dumke. The Publicity Committee has written and sent an article covering the 1998 BCOA National Specialty to Sighthound Review Magazine. This article includes photos of the winners, that Helen Lee electronically sent to the magazine. It was gratifying to know that Jim Gaidos (new owner of SR magazine) took the time to personally attend the Specialty. I understand that he also interviewed Sylvia Sohr (Twin Elms Borzoi), and hopefully we will see a future article in his magazine. If there are any other event that need coverage, or if anyone knows of any publications that would publish information on our Specialties or Supported entries, please contact Kalen Dumke.

  • Keeping Touch Committee – Edna Ogata & Phyllis Brettell. All correspondence and the mailing of cards is current and up to date at this time.

  • Centennial Planning Committee - Joe Rogers. Since the last meeting, Joe has contacted several hotels regarding our requirements and needs. A question arose regarding the actual year for the Centennial being either 2003 or 2004. After review of AKC material and club history, a motion was made by Laurie Kasowski, 2nd by Pat Murphy to use the AKC date of 2004 as the year of the BCOA Centennial. MOTION CARRIED.

  • Awards Report - Gwen Post. All supported entry medals have been mailed out. Metals from the 1997 specialty & the 1998 specialties were received. Gwen is working on another display that would show other BCOA medals and pins that we have used in the past. She will also start a 2nd case for specialty medals. The BCOA will need to order championship medals next year so now would be the time to decide this motion. The Board approved a quiz Gwen is putting together for publication in the Aristocrat. The board will review all medals and the membership pin ath the November board meeting.

  • Dogs of the Past - Lena Tamboer. An article was submitted to the Aristocrat for publication and another article will be coming out shortly for the Aristocrat. No pictures or articles have been received by Lena since the last meeting. Discussion regarding the Dogs of the Past book resulted in a request to the chairman for an inventory to be prepared of articles and photos currently owned by the BCOA for the next board meeting. With the Centennial fast approaching the board would wish to review the extent of the materials currently on hand. A motion was made by Karen Staudt-Cartabona, 2nd by Shen Smith to authorize the Corresponding Secretary to request an inventory to be prepared on the materials in the Dogs of the Past Committee. MOTION CARRIED.

  • Annual Awards & Conformation Medals - Kim Horn. As some of you may be aware, quite a few complications arose in the fabrication of the 1996 Annual Award Plaques. As of this date, the plaques are enroute to Kim and will be in the patient hands of the recipient by the time the board meeting takes place. The 1997 Annual Award Plaques were presented at the Awards Banquet during the National Specialty week and continue to be well received by the winners.

27 BCOA member-owned Borzoi have completed the requirements for their American championship title as recored in the AKC Gazette, issues 4/98 - July/98. Medallions were sent to the first BCOA member listed as owner.

  • Historian - Laurie Kasowski. The Historian albums were displayed at the Wisconsin National and were well received. A big thank you to Pam & Bill Leichtman for sending them back in record time. Research for the Centennial is currently underway with Jerry Hayes, AKC Librarian. A motion was made by Laurie Kasowski, 2nd by Karen Staudt-Cartabona to dedicate the 100th Anniversary BCOA National Specialty Show to the memory of Joseph B. Thomas. MOTION CARRIED.

  • BCOA Coverlet - Sharon Robinson. All coverlets were sold within two weeks of delivery. The next project suggested would be tapestry style pillows which would look good with a headstudy or a hunting scene. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Alice Reese to go forward with the pillow project in either a headstudy or a hunting scene. MOTION CARRIED. It was also suggested that puppies might also be nice on the pillows.

  • Aristocrat - Sharon Robinson. Champions of record will not be included due to the size of the summer issue. A volunteer is being requested to work on the champions of record section. Volunteer should have access to email to prepare the material for printing.

  • 1998 Futurity - Kathleen Kapaun. The 1998 Futurity was a success. Judge Jay Cunningham worked his way through the puppies. We are once again extending a heartfelt thank you to the ring stewards, Tim & Sharon Robinson. Rhanda Glenn, trophy chairman selected and set up a beautiful trophy table.

  • Standardized Trophies - Barbara O'Neill. All standardized trophies are up to date. The Triathlon trophy will no longer travel. Garry Newton, original artist, has agreed to make as close to a replicate of the bronze as he can and this will serve as a momento of the award. He has volunteered to donate this momento to past winners if BCOA will pay the shipping charges. Discussion is necessary on keeping the pewter double eagle medallions as is or have it made into a pin on the next order. Challenge trophies the Board may consider: Best of Opposite Sex, Best of Winners, Best in Puppy Sweeps, Best in Veteran Sweeps, Best Puppy, Best Veteran, Best in Futurity, Best Junior Showman, and High in Trial. A motion was made by Laurie Kasowski, 2nd by Alice Reese to pay the shipping charges to provide replicas of the Triathlon trophy to past winner. MOTION CARRIED. MOTION CARRIED. A suggestion for placement would be with the Lure Coursing Trials.

  • Specialty Guidelines - Barbara O'Neill. The specialty guidelines will be updated as soon as possible.

  • Obedience & Agility Pamphlet - Kathleen Kapaun. The committee is hard at work on this pamphlet. Debra Sharp has joined us and we are grateful for her input. This is a challenging project with a lot of material to condense.

  • Judges' Education Committee - Patti Neale. The judges study group at the National Specialty in Racine, was a small but enthusiastic bunch. Seven judges signed up in advance and were joined by two others who were approved Borzoi judges, for part of the study group. Lorraine Groshans and Marilyn Polsfuss organized the ringside mentoring and conducted the hands-on session with live dogs. As in years past, Patti presented the Saturday night slide seminar, as it was not in conflict with her duties as judge at the event. The new Visualization of the Standard was very well received by the judges in the study group, and was mailed shortly thereafter to all AKC approved Borzoi judges. The Visualization was also sent to several departments within AKC, and Mari-beth O'Neill, head of Judges Education, requested 20 copies to be distributed to the AKC Field Representatives, which were mailed in June.

Gloria Reese presented Borzoi at the Western Sighthound Asso. Of So. California show in June. She was provided with a master to copy of BCOA's Judge Study Materials.

In July, Borzoi were presented as part of the Texas Dog Judges Assoc. series of seminars held at the Astrohall in Houston. Twenty-nine people attended, among them several Borzoi fanciers, as well as several judges who are already approved for Borzoi. (Attached with minutes of this meeting are comments received from judges regarding the VS).

  • Lure Coursing - K.C. Artley. 12 medals have been sent to members dogs who have earned Field Championships to this date. The final 1997 lure coursing stats were printed in the April Aristocrat. Dr. Tilley (Cardiologist) is slated for the next specialty. We will need to set up a time with them in the evening that will work best. Maureen Bardwell has offered to help the Health Committee on Fund Raising projects. Prints should have been sent out to the trhee people that have donated more than $50.00 to the health fund. Rhanda Glenn is in charge of mailing out prints.
