A motion was made by Alice Reese, 2nd by Marilyn Polsfuss to approve the delegate's report. MOTION CARRIED. Specialty Coordinator - Bruce Averill. No written report was received. 1998 National - Discussion regarding ring layout for Racine resulted in the board requesting Bruce to coordinate with Joe Rogers regarding the ring layout diagrams. Barbara O'Neill will coordinate and report to the board at the December meeting. Borzoi Club Co-Op - Discussion regarding BCOA and the new co-op publication resulted in a motion by Marilyn Polsfuss, 2nd by Karen Staudt-Cartabona to fully participate in the cooperative project. MOTION CARRIED. Aristocrat/Yearbook Standing Rules were reviewed. A motion was made by Laurie Kasowski, 2nd by Rhanda Glenn to approve the reviewed rules. MOTION CARRIED. Lure Coursing chairman, K.C. Artley suggested that 1. BCOA continue to publish the "Top Ten" BCOA member dogs statistics (AKC & ASFA trials) using the same format previously used, 2. Discontinue the publication of the AKC & ASFA lure coursing titles as the titles are already published in the AKC Awards, and the ASFA Field Advisory News as the cost to advertise in the new publication is very inexpensive which will encourage members to purchase an ad to announce their new Field Champions, and, 3. for the same reasons as stated in #2, discontinue the publication of the AKC Conformation Championships and Obedience titles, but continue to publish the "Top Ten" statistics for member owned dogs in Conformation and Obedience. The Board thanks K.C. Artley for her suggestions and will defer this information to the new editor of the Aristocrat for a final decision. 1998 National Specialty - Racine, Wisconsin. Report was received from Paul & Ardietta Thompson, co-chairs requesting permission to hold two Agility Trials in Feb/98 and March/98. Consensus of the Board grants permission for these trials. 1998 Futurity - Kathleen Kapaun & Barbara O'Neill. The 1998 Futurity currently has 26 new bitch nominations with 23 new litter nominations. There has been $1,355.00 collected in fees to date. A profit was seen in the 1997 Futurity and was forwarded to the treasurer for use in the lean years. The 1998 Futurity closes November 5, 1997. Discussion of ways to raise funds for the Futurity trophies, as there usually is a dramatic rise and fall in the entries for this event. After further discussion, the Futurity trophy solicitation will be placed on the flyer going out to the membership-requesting trophy pledges for the 1998 National. Keeping Touch Committee - Edna Ogata & Phyllis Brettell. All correspondence and the mailing of cards is current and up to date at this time. Standardized Trophies - Barbara O'Neill, Kathleen Kapaun & Shen Smith. All trophies have been standardized and have been submitted to the board for approval. Still to be discussed is the proposal for donating a cash prize in the name of the BOB winner to Borzoi health research. After review, a motion was made by Rhanda Glenn, 2nd by Kathleen Kapaun to approve the standardized trophy list. MOTION CARRIED. Further discussion regarding creating a standardized statue for the Best of Opposite Sex to Best in Futurity. We currently have the bronze puppy for Best in Futurity and some feel a nice trophy would be in order for BOS. Rhanda Glenn and Kathleen will research the question and provide a report for the December board meeting. Specialty Guidelines - Barbara O'Neill. The specialty guideline revisions are up to date but seemly never complete. They are currently being formatted for distribution in an easy-to-use three ring binder. Statistics Reports were received from Lure Coursing - K.C. Artley, Open Field & Versatility - Karen Ackerman, Obedience - Edna Ogata, Junior Showmanship - Jackie Levin, and Conformation - Jon & Nancy Reimer. (Reports are printed in the Arisocrat). Health Committee - Barbara Binder, Alice Reese & Lou Avant. It was decided at this years National that there will be a first aid kit available at a central location at all future Nationals. Location of where the kit can be found will be posted in the premium lists. The survey handed out at the Annual Meeting in April was very helpful. The problems in our breed as the breeders view it are: 1. Heart Problems; 2. Cancers; 3. Bloat; and 4. Hypothyroidism. The Health Committee will be focusing their energy in those areas. While there are certainly other problems seen in the breed, these seem to be the most prevalent and certainly the first three most life threatening. The Health Committee is planning on having a seminar on Friday of the National Specialty in Wisconsin. More details will be available for the next board meeting. The Canine Health Foundation and the American Kennel Club will be hosting a National Parent Club Canine Health Conference from November 1-3rd in St. Louis, Mo. The BCOA representative is Lou Avant, DVM. If anyone has any questions or areas that they would like to see addressed please contact one of the committee members. Historian - Laurie Kasowski. The Historian albums were shipped to the Atlanta National and displayed in the ballroom during one of the dinners. They have been received back with one being damaged in shipping. This one has been repaired. There was discussion about alternative ways of saving the historian files and Laurie will look into and report back at the next Board meeting. Dogs of the Past Book - Lena Tamboer. Status remains about the same as the last report. No new material has been received and a trip is being planned to the AKC Library this fall. Coursing and Obedience Pamphlets - Kathleen Kapaun. The coursing pamphlet will contain Open Field and Lure Coursing. Rough drafts should be to the board soon. Agility will be added to the Obedience pamphlet. Two new committee members have been added: Chris Danker is helping with Obedience and Pam Leitchnam is working on the Agility section. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 1998. Yearbooks & Yearplates - Barbara Yoon. Inventory report was received. Discussion regarding the creation of an Archives resulted in a motion by Shen Smith, 2nd by Karen Staudt-Cartabona to appoint Barbara Yoon to chair the newly created Archive Committee. MOTION CARRIED. Club Education - Jennifer Beach-Buda. Club Education events and additional '97 National committee offerings at the 1997 National were well attended. Club Education seminars included two art classes facilitated by Karen Cartabona. Classes were full and potential attendees had to be turned away. The seminar on Pre-Revolutionary Russian Borzoi presented by Dr. James Sillers was extremely well-received and attended by approx. 80 people. Photocopies of manuscripts Dr. Sillers has had translated from the Russian were sold with the proceeds going to BCOA. Plans for Club Education events at the '98 National are well underway. The BCOA Web site continues to be well visited with over 1,000 hits per month. A new page was added outlining the goals and scope for the new Borzoi co-op publication. Several new breeder/member listing were added. The Web site project continues to operate 'in the black'. AKC Gazette - Jennifer Beach-Buda The August AKC Gazette has arrived in mailboxes around the country. This issue contains the Borzoi Breed column article, "Origins of the Borzoi". The next column will appear in the November, 1997 issue. BCOA Borzoi Rescue - Barbara Skinner. A thank you was received from the N.B.R.F. for the donation of $500.00 toward the spaying/neutering of any Borzoi. N.B.R.F. reported that during the National Week they raised over $3,600.00 for rescue projects. Several Borzoi were placed via Regional Club rescues, more details on those will be covered in the Annual Report. Nationwide four or five Borzoi were returned to their breeders of record. Florida and California seem to have, statistically, more rescue problems than the rest of the country, with the Northeast pulling up in 3rd place for that unwanted recognition. Inventory & Medal Committee - Gwen Post. An Annual Report was received from Gwen. Additional championship medals were ordered and received. From these medals 150 have been sent to the appropriate chairpersons. Supported medals have been sent out. Of the items in inventory, all of the 1994 tote bags were brought for the specialty. One specialty medal was donated to the auction. Currently in inventory are some catalogs from the 1994 specialty and some medals from past specialties. These medals will be used for future auctions. BCOA Cookbooks - Kitty Rogers, Sharon Robinson & Connie Meldgin. BCOA treasurer has issued a check in the amount of $1,245.00 for the order of 300 cookbooks. An ad will appear in the Aristocrat for the sale of the books. Judges' Education Committee Report - Patti Widick Neale. The 1998 Judges' Study Group at the National Specialty had 9 prospective Borzoi judges. Study materials were mailed in advance to the participants and they met for ringside mentoring on Saturday and the slide presentation and discussion on Saturday night. In addition, three Borzoi breeders who applied for the JSG were in attendance. Afterwards, Marilyn Polsfuss and Lorraine Groshans conducted a hands-on session with a number of good Borzoi presented by their owners for the student judges to go over and evaluate. Ringside tutoring continued on Sunday. The show committee provided the group with an excellent vantage point and the student judges were enthusiastic about our breed. A copy of the Judges Study Material has been provided to the Board. The Study Material has been in use in its present form for the last two years and has to my best estimate, been distributed by others, and myself to approx. 250 people. Prospective judges make up the better part of this number but quite a few have been BCOA members at some of the seminars open to the general fancy as well as the judges-only events. They were also used at the Borzoi fanciers' seminar that I gave to the Texas Borzoi Club in Houston last summer. I have received only positive feedback on the various articles included within, by Sharon Robinson, Asa Mays, Alice Reese and myself and others, as well as the excellent copy by the authors of the 1972 Illustrated Standard, who included some of the leading lights in our breed. The American Dog Judges Institute requested a presenter for their August school in Pennsylvania. The sighthound breeds will be covered in depth over the course of that week to a maximum of 16 judges. Pat Murphy agreed to be the speaker for the event with the aid of Lorraine Groshans. Pat will be using the slide presentation that I have used for the last three years. I have provided the ADJA with the BCOA study material. Other BCOA members that will be in attendance as students will be Jay Cunningham and Chris Neale. Sherri Morant has also requested and received the parent club materials to use in a presentation to a Judges' Workshop in the fall. We have had two requests for information from prospective Borzoi judges this quarter. Request was received from Donna Maharan for materials to be distributed at the St. Jude's World of Dogs Event in September. Judges Study Materials and Club Education materials will be available for all members or parties who are providing or conducting educational seminars or workshops. Members are asked to contact Patti Neale for BCOA JEC material and Jennifer Beach-Buda for Club Education materials and pamphlets. Illustrated Standard Committee - Patti Neale, Pat Murphy, Barbara Lord, Alice Reese & Nadine Johnson. No report was received for this meeting. As the Illustrated Standard is a very important educational tool for the membership and for prospective judges, the Board is asking that this committee seek to finish the Illustrated Standard in the very near future. The Board has placed the completion of this project as a top priority for the Club. Discussion regarding the cost to print the booklet with color drawing resulted in a need to solicit some outside commercial support for the project. Constitution & By Laws Revision. A final copy was presented for review. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Barbara O'Neill to place the corrected copy out for the membership vote. MOTION CARRIED. Ballots will be mailed in the September 1st Class mailing with a return date of 11/20/97. Nominating Committee - Laurie Kasowski, Chairman. Final report has been submitted which will be printed and mailed with the 1st Class mailing in September. A motion was made by Alice Reese, 2nd by Kathleen Kapaun to approve the committee reports. MOTION CARRIED. Membership Applications Three foreign applications have been tabled from a 1st reading until after the approval of the amendments to the Constitution and by-laws. These applicants do not have any BCOA member sponsors. Two applications have been tabled until the December board meeting. 1st Readings ( members are requested to address correspondence regarding these applicants to the attention of the recording secretary, Shen Smith, PO Box 175, Elk Rapids, Mi. 49629). MOTION CARRIED. Re-Instatement's: Anna Stewart & Lisa Simpson. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Karen Mays to approve the two reinstatements. MOTION CARRIED. UNFINISHED BUSINESS AKC Dog Museum. A motion was made by Karen Staudt-Cartabona, 2nd by Kalen Dumke to approve a donation of $100.00 to the AKC Dog Museum for 200 or more, Rosseau (1911) poster prints. MOTION CARRIED. The prints are being picked up by Rhanda Glenn for the BCOA. NEW BUSINESS Visa/MC Services For BCOA. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Alice Reese to authorize Barbara O'Neill to establish a BCOA account for Visa/MC. MOTION CARRIED. BCOA Coverlet - Sharon Robinson. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Marilyn Polsfuss to divide the profits from this project as follows: ½ of profits to the Centennial Show Committee, and ½ of the profits to the BCOA Health Committee to use where needed. MOTION CARRIED. Specialty Banners - Angela SanPaolo. Banners will be designed from all of the Regional Borzoi club logos for decoration around the national specialty ring each year. Additional Class For National Specialty. A motion was made by Kalen Dumke, 2nd by Angela SanPaolo to approve the addition of an additional non-regular class of Best In Veteran Class in Specialty Show with a rosette to be provided by the BCOA for this class. MOTION CARRIED. A challenge trophy will be solicited in the future for the winner of this class - interested members should contact Barbara O'Neill. TSE Policies - Tabled to December meeting. Board Review of JEC - "Judges Study Material" Handout Booklet. This Booklet contains in addition to the approved BCOA authored materials, several articles by BCOA members which have not previous to this meeting received the approval of the Board for distribution under the BCOA logo. Discussion on this topic was deemed difficult in a telephone conference call so the review was tabled to the December face to face meeting for further discussion. Clarification of Policies For the JEC Committee. (Tabled to December meeting). Policies for Specialty Sweepstakes Judges. The standing policy regarding nominations to judge the sweepstake events for a national specialty remains with the nominee having to have bred or owned Borzoi. The list of all licensed/provisional Borzoi judges was received. A revised list will be sent to the recording secretary following the AKC 3rd quarter list being added. Future specialty locations - the year 2000 - Region Five, and 2001 - Region One. These are the proposed locations at this time requests from members within these regions to host the national are being accepted. December Board Meeting. The next board meeting will be held on Saturday, December 6, 1997 in New Orleans, LA. As there was no additional business at this time, a motion was made by Laurie Kasowski, 2nd by Angela SanPaolo to adjourn. MOTION CARRIED. Meeting was adjourned at 12:35 AM.
