The 2000 Futurity will close November 20, 1999 with 29 new bitch
nominations and 20 new litter nominations to date. There has been $1,031.00 collected. The Futurity is planned for Sunday, May 21, 2000.
After discussion, a motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd
by Marilyn Polsfuss, to include the Futurity catalog with the specialty
catalog. MOTION CARRIED.
Standardized Trophies - Barbara O'Neill.
All Standardized Trophies are up to date.
Specialty Guidelines - Barbara O'Neill.
The Specialty Guidelines are being updated. National Sales - Barbara Yoon.
Total sales at the 1999 national were $2,130.15.
This was down from the prior national with two possible
explanations: 1. market
saturation, or 2. members on tight budgets.
Sales from 5/28/ - 7/31/99 were $478.00 primarily from the
"Growing Borzoi" mugs and several shipments abroad.
Archives - Barbara Yoon.
No change from the Feb/99 report.
Obedience - Edna Ogata.
Report was received and will be printed in the Aristocrat.
Club Education - Jennifer Beach-Buda.
We had a good turnout of approx. 80 attendees for the Club Ed
seminar at the 1999 national in Denver.
A seminar on Canine First Aid with emphasis on Borzoi needs is
tentatively scheduled for the 2000 national in Portland, Or.
Kalen Dumke, RN will be one of the presenters along with a Red
Cross instructor from Portland. A
nominal feel to cover the cost of materials and equipment will be
charged. A certificate or
card will be issued to those who complete the session.
BCOA Web Site - Jennifer Beach-Buda.
The BCOA site has moved to a new server and address - http://www.borzoiclubofamerica.com
Server space has been donated graciously by Shen Smith on her
server. BCOA has been
contacted by AKC regarding a new AKC National Breed Club Breeder
Referral site to be set up by September/99.
We have met AKC guidelines for our own breeder/member list pages,
and AKC will link to these pages when the new AKC site is completed. As we now have web hosting provided to us at no cost my
recommendation is to offer free breeder listings to BCOA breeder/members
in good standing. These
listing would be identical to our current breeder directory but would
NOT include photos. In
addition, we may want to put our membership list, with individual
approval, on our web site. Gazette
Breed Column - Jennifer Beach-Buda.
The most recent column, published in August, 1999, covered care
of the Borzoi coat. We
continue to provide a breed specific article for Gazette publication
every three months. Inventory & Medals - Gwen Post.
At this point all medals have been sent out.
Nothing has changed since the last meeting regarding counts, etc.
I did receive the display medals back from the specialty. Gwen requests that if there were any medals left from this
year's specialty they will be added to the inventory.
1999 Nominating Committee - Fred Edlin, MD.
The final report of the 1999 nominating committee (Dr. Edlin,
Carol Spritzer & Michelle Lucky-Rowton) is as follows:
President - Barbara O'Neill, VP - Kathryn Wright, Recording
Secretary - Gwen Post, Corresponding Secretary - Karen Mays, Treasurer -
Shen Smith, Region 1 Governor - Wayne Garcia, Region 3 Governor - Steve
Gross and Region 5 Governor - Kathleen Kapaun. Lure Coursing - KC
Artley. A letter
was written to AKC concerning the incomplete lure coursing results they
have been publishing. KC is
glad to report that the AKC has fixed its computer software bug. The results are now being published with the breed winners
listed and with the total number of dogs in competition listed.
Corrections have been published for the previously incomplete
trials so a "Top Ten" list can be complied for the October
Aristocrat. For the July
Aristocrat, Kc submitted an article on rule changes for lure coursing,
both ASFA & AKC. She
also submitted a list of new ASFA Field Champions and Lure Coursers of
Merit, and AKC Field Champions and Master Courser titles.
Medals have been mailed to BCOA members who's Field Championships
were published thru the June 1999 publications. Awards &
Conformation Medallions - Kim Horn.
Since the last report for the 2/99-board meeting, 77 BCOA
member-owned Borzoi have completed the requirements for their Am.
Championship title as recorded in the AKC Gazette, issues Feb-July 1999.
Medallions were sent to the first BCOA member listed as owner.
Every attempt has been made to send out medallions to the owners
of our newest champions. However, as always, if any member has not received a
medallion, which they feel they are entitled, please contact Kim Horn
with the dog's registered name, completed title date and the BCOA
member's name. Upon
verification, the medallion will be sent.
At present Kim has 33 medallions left in inventory.
This should be enough to last through October's mailing.
Award plaques were presented at our Annual Awards Banquet held
during our national specialty week in Denver, Co.
Unfortunately, just three of the award winners were present to
accept their awards. The
balance of the awards had to be sent via USP to the recipients.
Additionally, all award winners were sent a letter with ad copy
format for their inclusion in the Summer Aristocrat.
Once again, one award winner missed the deadline and one failed
to respond at all. Junior
Showmanship - Barbara Tyler-Lord.
An interview with junior handler - Allyssa Brandtman is underway
and will appear in the upcoming issue of the Borzoi Connection in the
Junior Section, along with a photo of her and her dogs. The up to date statistics for junior handlers has been
tallied. Currently another
interview with a junior is being scheduled for a future issue of the
Borzoi Connection. Historian
- Laurie Kasowski. The
Historian photo albums were displayed in Denver and were well received.
The Historian is continuing to collect BCOA columns from the AKC
Gazette. If any members
would be willing to copy these columns and send them to the Historian,
they will be reimbursed for their copy expenses. Judge Education Committee - Patti Neale.
Slide/video project is on hold until we get a scanner up and
going. Further info will be
available for the December board meeting. Health Committee - Alice
Reese. After review
of the health foundations currently undertaking canine health study the
health committee has determined that canine heart research is currently
geared toward Dobes and Boxers. As
the health committee would hope that the BCOA would fund a research more
toward Borzoi benefit, she suggests that funding be directed to Morris
Animal Foundation. A motion
was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by KC Artley that BCOA direct
health funds toward MAI. MOTION
CARRIED. A motion was made
by KC Artley, 2nd by Shen Smith, to approve the committee
reports. MOTION CARRIED. Unfinished
Business Standing
Rules
- tabled until December meeting. Constitution
Ballot
- will be prepared and mailed to membership with these minutes. Protested

A motion was made by Alice Reese, 2nd by Laurie
Kasowski to appoint Shen Smith to chair Case #1.
MOTION CARRIED. A
motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by Shen Smith to table
Case #1 until a study of the charges can be undertaken.
MOTION CARRIED. Case
#2. Chairman Alice
Reese reported that her committee, as requested from the previous board
meeting, has conducted a study into the charges before the board.
After discussion, a motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd
by Alice Reese to drop the case. MOTION
CARRIED. Consolidation
of BCOA Pamphlets. A consensus of the board
to appoint KC Artley & Pat Murphy to a committee to review the
materials for consolidation of all BCOA pamphlets into a booklet form. ROM
- Registery of Merit - Alice Reese, Ariel Duncan & Marilyn Polsfuss.
A report was received indicating the committee is currently
reviewing ROM programs from other breed clubs to find a system they feel
will more benefit our breed. A
more detailed report will be provided for the December board meeting.
A motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by Shen Smith to
appoint Marilyn Polsfuss as Statistics chairman for the ROM program.
MOTION CARRIED. Tax
Exempt Status for BCOA. Table to December board
meeting. Pamphlets
- Karen Mays reported the BCOA is out of several pamphlets.
Reorders will be placed on items needing to be replenished. Medal
Review from Annual Membership Meeting.
BCOA board has reviewed the medals currently being given out and
the only medal which should be updated is the Championship medal which
will remain the historical medal which is approx. 60 years old. The current medal is a copy of the original medal given out by BCOA since approx. 1935. A
new mold will be created from an original medal to try and recapture the
details of the original medal. New
Business BCOA
Catalog Artwork. It has recently come to
the attention of the BCOA board that a graphic was used in the BCOA
catalog as a filler which did not have the permission of the artist.
After review of events, it was determined that the graphic was
sent in to BCOA approx. between 1987-1990 by an unknown party.
A file of graphics has been in the possession of BCOA since a
request was issued for filler artwork in the late 1980's.
Artist has requested to be paid $250.00 for the graphic which was
placed on page 44 of the BCOA catalog.
After review of the request for payment the board feels the
following is in order: 1.
Graphic
used was so used without intent on BCOA's part
to "steal" this artwork as artist's name and date were
included with the filler piece in the catalog.
Artist received credit in the catalog for the artwork and BCOA
did not use her artwork for any form of profit.
The BCOA catalog does not make a profit. Centennial
Book - Kitty Rogers. A proposal was received
regarding printing costs and information for a Centennial Book of poems
and stories. After review
of the proposal, a motion was made by Fred Edlin, MD, 2nd by
Pat Murphy to not authorize funds for the printing as the project is to
expensive to produce. MOTION
CARRIED. BCOA
50/50 Auction - Specialty Sales. A
recommendation has been received to do away with the 50/50 auction with
the BCOA nationals when there is a consignment shop with the specialty.
Another recommendation was to raise the BCOA interest from
consignment sales to 25% as it is the BCOA who draws in the clients for
consignment shops and/or auctions.
Also, free vendor space such as rescue groups, etc. will be
strictly limited to one table. After
discussion, a motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Kathleen
Kapaun to update the specialty guidelines to include the above
recommendations. MOTION
CARRIED. The
next board meeting will be held on December 4, 1999 in Las Vegas,
Nevada. As
there was no further business at this time, a motion was mde by KC
Artley, 2nd by Marilyn Polsfuss to adjourn.
MOTION CARRIED. Meeting
was adjourned at 11:03 PM. Respectfully
submitted, Shen
B. Smith
