Annual Borzoi Club of America, Inc. Board Meeting The Annual BCOA Board Meeting was called to order by the president, Barbara O'Neill, at 8:30 AM on Sunday, May 3, 1998. All board members were present except Laurie Kasowski. A quorum was established. Minutes of the February Board Meeting. The following corrections were noted on the minutes of the previous meeting: Treasurer's Report - replace "to continue" with "to obtain"; Page four - August board meeting to be a "telephone conference meeting"; Fall board meeting is "tentatively scheduled for California"; and Page three, add Lynn Green to list of members working on the coursing pamphlet. A motion was made by Marilyn Polsfuss, 2nd by Karen Mays to approve the February minutes with the above corrections. MOTION CARRIED Recording Secretary - Shen Smith. Judges ballots were prepared and mailed to the membership with a return date of April 25, 1998. Specialty judges selected by the membership are Patricia Craige Trotter and Christine Rafton. Sweepstake judges are Shen Smith and Peter San Paolo. Judges will be contacted in the very near future. Two TSE applications were received: November 15, 1998 - Greater Gainesville Dog Fancier Assoc., BCOA Trophy Supported Entry - Judge - Dyan Roth, Sweeps - Ron Williams, TSE chairman Shea Bailey & Tammy Smith, Supt. MB-F (Greensboro, NC). January 8, 1999 - Inland Empire Hound Club of S.California, BCOA Trophy Supported Entry - Judge - Pat Ellis, Sweeps - Karen Mays, Show Chairman - Jackie Wassenaar (909) 681-4984, TSE chairman - Tom & Laurie Kasowski. A motion was made by Alice Reese, 2nd by Fred Edlin to approve the proposed TSE applications. MOTION CARRIED. Two letters were received from members who missed the dues deadline asking for extentions. After discussion, a motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Fred Edlin to not make exceptions in dues as a member has from September 15th - March 1st to pay up their dues. MOTION CARRIED. The pending membership applications received new sponsor forms and will be placed back on the list for 1st readings. AKC applications for sweepstake approval must be completed and submitted by the recording secretary. A signed copy of the sweeps application will be sent to the superintendent and the AKC by the recording secretary. A motion was made by Marilyn Polsfuss, 2nd by Rhanda Glenn to approve the recording secretary's report. MOTION CARRIED. Corresponding Secretary - Karen Mays. A complete report was submitted outlining all club activity since the last board meeting. A letter was received from the AKC requesting the appointment of a 1998 coursing grand courser. The BCOA requests the coursing chairman to make the appointment to represent BCOA. Disaster and emergency plan copies will be created for the Colorado and Portland nationals. A motion was made by Kalen Dumke, 2nd by Kathleen Kapaun to approve the corresponding secretary's report. MOTION CARRIED. Treasurer - Marilyn Polsfuss. A complete report was received and will be published with these minutes. Total asset balance is $32,826.50 with $6,852.44 in positive balance for 1998. Visa and Master Card service is now available for all BCOA sales and dues. Bonding is in place with the following members currently bonded: Marilyn Polsfuss, Barbara O'Neill, Shen Smith, and Barbara Yoon. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Pat Murphy to accept the treasurer's report. MOTION CARRIED. A.K.C. Delegate - Karen Staudt-Cartabona. A complete report is attached with these minutes. Note to members: The A.K.C. promotion of DNA testing is for identification purposes only and NOT for health. A motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by Marilyn Polsfuss to approve the delegate's report. MOTION CARRIED. Specialty Coordinator (Vice President) - Pat Murphy. The following schedule for nationals is currently in place: 1999-Region 3, 2000-Region 5, 2001-Region 1, 2002-Region 4, 2003-Region 2 (or centennial show), 2004-Region 6, 2005-Region 3 and 2006-Region 5. Emergency & disaster plans are being worked on and will be ready for the 1999 national. Specialty guidelines - stronger wording is needed to get across the need for the show committees to raise funds in their areas to support the national. A National Specialty Committee will be formed consisting of the previous Show Chairman, and Trophy Chairman, as well as semi-permanent and permanent members as a standing committee. Suggestion for history tracking on meals and banquets to assist the next specialty. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Fred Edlin to approve the specialty coordinator's report. MOTION CARRIED. Report was received from Carol Enz, show chairman, with up dates on the 1999 National. Dates for the BCOA National Specialty show in the year 2000 are May 24-27th, 2000. Regional Governor Reports. Reports were received from the governors. A motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by Alice Reese that all governors reports be typed (and if at all possible, submitted electronically), and a 2nd copy of the report be sent to the editor of the Aristocrat for printing. MOTION CARRIED. COMMITTEE REPORTS Centennial Report - Joe Rogers. Proposal was received from Andrew Knapp for the centennial show to be located on the east coast. Report was received from Joe Rogers. Several sites are currently being looked into. BCOA National (2000) - a proposal was received from Eugene Hill for the national to be located in Portland, Oregon for the year 2000. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Pat Murphy to approve the proposal for Portland, Oregon as the site for the BCOA 2000 national specialty show. MOTION CARRIED. Cookbook Committee - Kitty Rogers. The BCOA extends a huge thank-you to Kitty Rogers, Sharon Robinson and Connie Meldgin for the completion of a very wonderful cookbook project A motion was made by Fred Edlin, 2nd by Pat Murphy to refund the excess shipping and postage if requested by those who pick up their cookbooks at the National. MOTION CARRIED. Cookbooks are priced at $12.00 + $3.00 for postage and may be ordered from Kitty Rogers. 1998 Futurity - Barbara O'Neill. The 1998 Futurity was closed as of November 5th with 32 new bitch nominations and 29 new litter nominations. There are 122 dogs entered (53-69) with a total entry of 131. There has been $3,650.00 collected to include non-regular classes and catalog ads. There are 39 puppies eligible for continuation to the 1999 Futurity. 1999 Futurity - Kathleen Kapaun & Barbara O'Neill. The 1999 Futurity opened November 6, 1997 and closes November 25, 1998. There are 18 new bitch nominations and 14 new litter nominations to date. There has been $460.00 collected to date. Standardized Trophies - Barbara O'Neill. All standardized trophies are up to date. A motion was made by Fred Edlin, 2nd by Marilyn Polsfuss to no longer allow the Triathlon trophy to travel. The trophy will be retained with other BCOA trophies and a commorative piece will be offered for permanent possession. MOTION CARRIED. Specialty Guidelines - Barbara O'Neill. The guidelines are up to date and distributed. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Karen Mays that the Rosseau prints be given each year as judge's gifts for the TSE and National judges. MOTION CARRIED. Inventory - Gwen Post. Medals have been sent to all TSE events. Also, 100 championship medals were sent to Kim Horn, and 50 championship medals were sent to K.C. Artley. There are enough medals for this year and will need to reorder late next year. The supply of TSE medals and Borzoi lapel pins is good. Needed for the display cases are: 1975-Western National Medal, 1978-75th Anniversary Medal (Philadelphia), 1984-California National, 1988-Virginia National, 1990 Detroit National, and the 1991-Florida National. Any members who would be willing to donate one of these items, please contact Gwen Post. Also needed are: a current membership pin. Judges Education Committee- Patti Neale, Chairman. A report was received reflecting update on Visualization of the Borzoi Standard. Club Education - Jennifer Beach-Buda. Club education seminars at the 1998 national specialty include the slide presentation of the Borzoi Standard, hosted by Pat Murphy and Lorraine Groshans. How to Draw Borzoi, facilitated by Karen Staudt-Cartabona, and Grooming for the Show Ring, presented by Rhanda Glenn. Ideas for next year's seminars are being discussed with the '99 National Specialty Committee. Suggestions from the general membership for topics and activities are most welcome. The BCOA web site hosted Specialty information, including the premium list and entry form, and raffle ticket forms with photos of raffle items. These files could be viewed, downloaded and printed by members and exhibitors. AKC Gazette Breed Column - Jennifer Beach-Buda. The Borzoi breed column is submitted to the Gazette breed columns editor every three months, with the next two columns due out in May and August. Recent topics covered in the column were the Borzoi topline, origins of the Borzoi, and Borzoi development. It may be possible to have our National Specialty results included in an upcoming Gazette. Annual Versatility Awards - Karen Ackerman. The winner of the 1997 Annual Versatility Award has been won by Dual Ch. Svershin Sergei, CD, JC owned by Brenda Wendt, Terry Beamer and Pat Hardy. Health Committee - Alice Reese & Lou Avant, DVM. The health committee is requesting a volunteer to serve on the health committee in the form of an experienced fund raiser. If you would like to volunteer please contact Dr. Lou Avant. The current assets in the health fund are now $877.00 with the majority of funds coming from fees for the bloat seminar. A motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by Kalen Dumke to thank Dr. Lou Avant for the National Emergency Kit and Emergency Plan. MOTION CARRIED. Awards Chairman - Kim Horn. In 1997, 130 BCOA member-owned Borzoi completed the requirements for their American championship titles as recorded in the AKC Awards, issues April 1997-March 1998. Medallions were sent to the 1st BCOA member listed as owner. If any member has not received a medallion which they feel they are entitled to, they should contact Kim Horn with their dog's registered name, completed title date and BCOA member's name. Historian - Laurie Kasowski. As always the BCOA Historian photo albums will be on display at the National. This past year it was decided that from now on, BCOA will requst two sets of National Specialty photos, one to be displayed in the albums, and one to be sent to the BCOA archivist. It has been Laurie's pleasure to be the caretaker of these precious memories of this noble breed. BCOA Rescue Report - Barbara Skinner. Report will be published with the minutes of the Annual Membership Meeting. Publicity Committee - Kalen Dumke. To date both the Sighthound Review and Dogs in Review are planning coverage of our National. Photos will be submitted to the magazines for publication following the specialty. BCOA Club Sales Committee-Barbara Yoon. A complete report of inventory and archives was received. Keeping in Touch Committee-Edna Ogata & Phyllis Brettell. Committee correspondence is current and up to date at this time. KIT sent out 174 cards in 1997. The KIT response has been favorable and very touching in many cases. It has been most gratifying to work on this committee. Edna feels there are others that should be on the KIT list and hopes that member if they know of someone who should be on the list will notify them. Lure Coursing Pamphlet Committee - Kathleen Kapaun, Chairman. - The coursing pamphlet has been complete and printed and will be mailed to the membership when these minutes go out. All attention has been focused now on the obedience and agility pamphlet. Statistics Reports were received from Jon & Nancy Reimer, Conformation, K.C. Artley, Coursing - medals were sent to members for 25 ASFA Field Championships and 15 AKC Championships., Karen Ackerman, Open Field, B. Lord & J. Levin - Junior Handling, Edna Ogata, Obedience - 12 medallions were earned in obedience for the 1997 year, 23 dogs earned scores in Novice, four dogs competed in Open and two dogs in Utility (one dog competed in both Open and Utility). Scores for member-owned Borzoi in Novice ranged from 195.0 to 171.0. The average score being 181.0. In Open the scores ranged from 195.0 to 176.5 with the average being 190.0. Scores in Utility ranged from 189.0 to 178.0 with the average being 183.9. 33 non-member Borzoi competed in 1997. It would be most helpful in the future, if BCOA members competing in obedience would send Edna Ogata (579 Cotton St., Menlo Park, CA 94025), dates of qualifying shows and scores. A motion was made by Fred Edlin, 2nd by Kathleen Kapaun to approve the above committee reports. MOTION CARRIED. Membership 2nd Readings 1ST Readings - Correspondence regarding these applicants shall be addressed to the recording secretary. Jane Klorer -37 Fletcher Street, Winchester, MA 01890 (Fred Vogel/Dick Blodgett) Membership applications. A motion was made by Karen Staudt-Cartabona, 2nd by Kathleen Kapaun, that the membership sponsor forms be revised to reflect that sponsor may not reside in the same household and that the word "recommendation" be removed from the form. MOTION CARRIED. New Business Specialty Guidelines - A motion was made by Alice Reese, 2nd by Pat Muprhy, that the guidelines be revised to require the ballroom for the specialty show to be a minimum of 7,000 sf with a minimum width of 60 feet. MOTION CARRIED. A motion was made by Kathleen Kapaun, 2nd by Rhanda Glenn that the guidelines be amended to reflect that no BCOA TSE events will be approved on the weekend immediately prior to the specialty date unles it is part of the specialty week events. MOTION CARRIED. Standing Rules Amendment. A motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by Marilyn Polsfuss that specialty judges may not hold, nor accept Borzoi assignment anywhere in the USA for a period of 6 months prior to the specialty show they are asked to judge. MOTION CARRIED. This standing rule will begin with the specialty judges for the year 2000. A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Pat Murphy to table the remaining standing rules until the face to face board meeting. MOTION CARRIED. BCOA Logo Update - tabled. Premium Lists. 1,006 premium lists were mailed out this year. A motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by Shen Smith, that the premium lists be mailed out 1st class to all those who entered this year, and the entire premium list will be put up on the web site for next year.
