Annual Board Meeting - May 23, 1999
Denver, Colorado

 The 1999 Annual Board Meeting of the Borzoi Club of America, Inc. was called to order by the president, Barbara O'Neill with all board members in attendance except: Karen Mays & Rhanda Glenn.  A quorum was established.

MINUTES OF LAST MEETING.  A motion was made by Marilyn Polsfus, 2nd by Fred Edlin, MD to approve the minutes as published.  MOTION CARRIED.

Recording Secretary - Shen Smith.    Minutes from the February meeting were mailed to the membership. All correspondence is current and up to date.   Correspondence was reviewed.  One TSE application was received for this board meeting for a supported show with the Detroit Kennel Club benched show on April 2, 2000.  Breed judge Patti Neale, sweepstakes judge - Amy Sorbie.  Trophy chairman to be Shen Smith.  A motion was made by Laurie Kasowski, 2nd by Pat Murphy to approve this TSE.  MOTION CARRIED.   Resignation was received from Region Three governor Rhanda Glenn.  A motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by K.C. Artley to appoint Steve Gross (Colorado) to serve out the remainder of the term (12/31/99).  MOTION CARRIED.  Discussion regarding two sets of charges received.  By lottery selection, Fred Edlin, MD, K.C. Artley & Karen Mays were selected to review charge set #1 to determine if jurisdiction should be entertained by the board.  Charge set #2 was (also by lottery) selected to determine if jurisdiction should be entertained by the board consisting of Alice Reese, Marilyn Polsfuss & Karen Staudt-Cartabona.  Reports are requested for the August board meeting with their committee determinations.  1999 Versitility Hall of Fame Inductee:  Dual Ch Rabrega Lady Peach, JC, CD, ASFA FCh, LCM, CGC, owned by Susan Van de Water, MD, breeder Linda Mazor  Peach finished her conformation championship – October 23, 1993, Companion Dog title – July 4, 1998, Field Championship 2/13/94, Dual Championship – 9/28/95, LCM – 4/12/98,  and Canine Good Citizen 9/17/94.

 Membership Applications  - 2nd Reading:  No correspondence regarding these new applicants has been received: Sharon Johnson, David Gordon, Margaret Lucia , Randy Hitesman, Patricia Paris , Pamela Stanek (Jr Member), Lee Kemp, Joyce Pulani, & Denise Como.  A motion was made by Fred Edlin, MD, 2nd by K.C. Artley,  to approve the applicants into membership.  MOTION CARRIED.

Error correction - re-instatements missed at Feb/99 board meeting.  John Sazy – check was included with Borzoi Connection mail and overlooked. Gerd Thorkilsrud  - this one  Marilyn missed.  Both should have been re-instated in February.

A motion was made by K.C. Artley, 2nd by Marilyn Polsfuss to approve the recording secretary's report.  MOTION CARRIED.

 Corresponding Secretary - Karen Mays.   At the May AKC board meeting it was voted to approve our request to retire the kennel names of O'Valley Farm, Romanoff, Malora and Trezor.  A request was received from St. Jude Showcase of Dogs asking for support of their event with booth space to "promote" the Borzoi..  Margie Paschall requested a TSE in conjunction with the Chicago International - no dates or application were received.  Complete list of correspondence received/sent was submitted for board review.  Decision was made to not support the St. Jude event this year.  A motion was made by Alice Reese, 2nd by Kathleen Kapaun to approve the corresponding secretary's report.  MOTION CARRIED.

 Treasurer - Marilyn Polsfuss.   Complete financial report is attached with these minutes.  Of special note, the BCOA has applied to and registered the club name with the Internic for a registered domain name.  The website address for the registered name is: http://www.borzoiclubofamerica.com.  Discussion regarding also registering the name borzoiclubofamerica.org with a decision that this might be a wise idea but will discuss this issue with the membership at the annual membership meeting.  A motion was made by Kathleen Kapaun, 2nd by Fred Edlin, MD to accept the treasurer's report.  MOTION CARRIED.

 AKC Delegat - Karen Staudt Cartabona.   A printed report is attached with these minutes.  A motion was made by Kathleen Kapaun, 2nd by Marilyn Polsfuss to approve the delegate's report.   MOTION CARRIED.

 V.P./Specialty Coordinator - Patricia Murphy.   Report was received on the status of the Portland, Or 2000 specialty show and the 2001 NY specialty show.  **** Special Note *****  5/26/99 reconvened board meeting.  A motion was made by Shen Smith, 2nd by Fred Edlin, MD to replace the 2000 show chairman with an interim chairman.  MOTION CARRIED.   Motion was made by Alice Reese, 2nd by Karen Staudt-Cartabona to appoint Barbara O'Neill as the interim chairman until a new chairman can be appointed.  MOTION CARRIED.

Governor's Reports.  Governor reports were received and are printed in the Summer/99 Aristocrat.   A motion was made by Pat Murphy,  2nd by Fred Edlin, MD to approve the governor reports.  MOTION CARRIED.

Committee Reports

Reports were received from the following committees:  Futurity - Barbara O'Neill -  The 1999 Futurity closed 11/24/99 with 34 new bitch nominations and 30 new litter nominations.  There has been a total of $2835.00 collected.  This is the 10th Annual Futurity and a special celebration is planned.  There are 37 puppies eligible to forward to the 2000 Futurity.  The Futurity Catalog will now be incorporated into the regular show catalog.  The 2000 Futurity began 11/25/98 and closed 11/22/99.  To date there are 17 new bitch nominations and 11 litter nominations entered with $281.00 collected.  Standardized Trophies - Barbara O'Neill  All trophies are up to date, Specialty Guidelines - Barbara O'Neill.  A motion was made by Fred Edlin, MD, 2nd by Shen Smith to amend the specialty guidelines to indicate that no BCOA specialty show could be held between May 15 & Sept 15 because of the heat index in regard to the airlines.  MOTION CARRIED. 

Health Committee - Alice Reese.   Health fund treasury balance is currently $2515.27 with expenses for seminar Vet still coming out of this figure plus a $500.00 honorarium to a research foundation. The Health Committee wishes to extend deepest sympathy to Vivian Kubiak, Carol Kubiak-Zamora and family on the loss of Charles Kubiak.   They also wish to thank them for their generous gesture of asking that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the BCOA Health Fund.  They also wish to thank the following persons for their generous donations of his memory:  Fred Edlin, MD, Tom & Laurie Kasowski, Angela San Paolo & family, Kathy Kapp, Paul & Sandra Cambreleng, Alice & Dick Reese, Ron Williams, BCDV, Karen Elaine Fenchel, Bernadine Molatzka and BCGNY.  Also a thank you to Tom & Laurie Kasowski for a generous donation in the memory of Ch Sky Run Hemlock Hollow Rerrun  "Yankee".  Thank you to the following persons for their donations of $50.00 or more and these have received the Rosseau print:  Joanne Browning, Lydia Pruett,

Medals & Inventory - Gwen Post.   Two displays have been sent for the National.   Championship medals need to be reordered.   A motion was made by Laurie Kasowski, 2nd by K.C. Artley to authorize Gwen to reorder the medals.  MOTION CARRIED.  Keeping In Touch - Edna Ogata.  Cards and letters have been sent out.  Total expenses this quarter were $6.27.  Archives & Sales - Barbara Yoon.  A sales report was received with a request for more BCOA blue books.  A motion was made by K.C. Artley, 2nd by Pat Murphy to release 20 more blue books for sale.  MOTION CARRIED.   Pamphlets - Kathleen Kapaun.  Obedience & Agility.  The chairman expressed thanks to the wonderful committee members who spent a great deal of time condensing a volume of information down to pamphlet size.  Without the help of Chris Danker and Debra Sharp, collaborating on the obedience portion, and Suzanne Degi, the agility, this    pamphlet would not have become a reality.  A motion was made by Pat Murphy, 2nd by Alice Reese to review the costs of combining all of the BCOA pamphlets into a book.  MOTION CARRIED.  K.C. Artley & Patricia Murphy will serve on the review committee. Futurity Event - Kathleen Kapaun.  This year is the 10th anniversary of the BCOA Futurity.  The Futurity committee would like to thank all the breeders who have supported this event with their litter nominations.  Our entries have grown steadily since the first futurity.  It is rewarding to see the pride breeders are taking in planning the future of our breed.  Historian - Laurie Kasowski.  The Historian photo albums will be on display in Denver.  Laurie would like to take this opportunity to thank    and publicly acknowledge her husband Tom for all of his help with putting together and shipping the Historian albums.  Laurie is continuing to collect BCOA columns from the AKC Gazette.  If any members wuld be willing to copy these columns and send them to her, they will be reimbursed for their copy expenses.  BCOA Publicity - Kalen Dumke.  Kalen will be contacting Sighthound Review, to see if they will again be sending a representative to take photos of the specialty event and a write up will be submitted to Dogs in Review.  Club Education - Jennifer Beach-Buda.  Seminar for the 1999 nations will be put on by Helen Lee James, Patti Neale & Nadine Johnson.  BCOA Web Site - Jennifer Beach-Buda.  The website continues to receive  1,000+ hits per month.  Web materials for the extensive sub-site on the 1999 national were provided by Paul & Carol Enz.   AKC Gazette Borzoi Breed Column - Jennifer Beach-Buda.  The February, 1999 column was titled "Moving With Power and Grace",  the May 1999 column is titled "Pre-breeding Health Screenings", and August column is titled "Borzoi Coat Care".  Archives - Barbara Yoon.  No change since last report in February.  Archive items are being given to BCOA in Denver from several members.  Any donation from the members & board members would be greatly appreciated.  Year Books/Year Plates - Barbara Yoon.  Cookbooks are sold out.  1983 yearplates are sold out.  There are only 16 1995 yearbooks still available.  Ther are 27 1990 yearbooks, 20 of which were shipped to Denver.  There are nine boxes of 1985 yearbooks still available for sale.  On the east coast the Visualizations are still selling.   The "Growing Borzoi" mugs have arrived and are now for sale.  The total sales since 1/1/99 thru 5/20/99 is $715.00.

BCOA Constitution & By-Laws - Marilyn Polsfuss & Shen Smith.  Review of the final copy resulted in a motion by Alice Reese, 2nd by Marilyn Polsfuss to prepare a ballot for membership vote. MOTION CARRIED.

BCOA Judges Education - Patti Neale.   Report was received regarding the approx costs to convert the slide presentation into video form for purchase by the membership.  Breakdown - slides $1.00 each currently have 300 slides but will need approx. 100 more slides, $75.00 per hour for lab editing to convert to VCR (about $500.00+), Cover w/insert will need to be created for the video, 100 tapes at approx. 3.00 ea., approx. one year for completion, with a suggested final purchase price of $29.95.  A motion was made by Laurie Kasowski, 2nd by Karen Staudt-Cartabona to authorize a budget of $2500.00 for the project.  MOTION CARRIED.  A request for permission to use photos from the BCOA Visualization of the Standard was received from The Borzoi Club of England.  Board indicated that this would be coordinated through the JEC with 2 copies of the finished product sent to the JEC.

Statistics - Obedience - Edna Ogata, Jr (report received).,  Handling - Barbara Lord.  Those juniors earing more than 50 points in one year, were mailed medallions.  Medallions were mailed out in the month of May.  As chairman for Juniors, Barbara will see that there are one or two interview with BCOA juniors include this year in the Borzoi Connection, Lure Coursing - K.C. Artley.  The Lure Coursing chairman has sent a letter to AKC requesting that the AKC Awards resume listing the number of dogs who competed in each lure coursing stake be published, by breed and by stake, in the AKC Awards.  BCOA has a top ten system based on the number of dogs defeated by getting a placement in the stake.  BCOA would like to continue to give awards to members whose dogs defeated the most Borzoi in lure coursing and to do this we need complete lure coursing trial results.  Agility - Gale Snoddy (report received).  A motion was made by Kathleen Kapaun, 2nd by K.C. Artley to approve the committee reports.  MOTION CARRIED.

National Specialty Show Committee - tabled.

New Business

Official  BCOA Tabulator - A motion was made by Patrica Murphy, 2nd by K.C. Artley that BCOA continue using the law firm of Samuel Ewing, III for all BCOA tabulations except the futurity judge selection.  MOTION CARRIED.

Aristocrat - Memorial Page.  Discussion regarding free member memorial ads in the Aristocrat indicated that board members feel the memorial page in the BCOA national specialty catalog should be suitable for memorials. There are no free ads in the Aristocrat.

ROM Program (Registry of Merit).   Several members submitted proposals for board review regarding the creation of a ROM program for BCOA.  A motion was made by Kathleen Kapaun, 2nd by Shen Smith, to appoint:  K.C. Artley, Ariel Duncan, Alice Reese & Marilyn Polsfuss to review the proposals, discuss the pros/cons of a ROM program, and make a recommendation to the board at the next board meeting.   MOTION CARRIED.

August Board Meeting (telephone conference) will be held on August 25, 1999.

Fall Board Meeting - December 4, 1999 in Las Vegas.  Discussion regarding locations with easy access from all parts of the country indicated that Las Vegas has air/room packages with discounted prices.

As there was no further business at this time, a motion was made by Alice Reese, 2nd by Laurie Kasowski to adjourn.  MOTION CARRIED.
